The way we were

It's funny how a movie or song can trigger such vivid memories, even one's that happened a long time ago.
This past weekend the movie The way we were was on t.v., the movie in and of itself is good. Robert Redford is handsome beyond words, and the beautiful voice of Barbara Streisand singing the title song. But it's the memories of going to the movie that i remember most, it was Kathy's 13th birthday and Mom was taking us out for a girl's day. Back in the day going to a movie was a real treat, they were few and far between. Of course then we did not have 24 movies to pick from, a few would come out each month. But this was a special day, a birthday for the girls to celebrate and celebrate we did. The setting was the Lauderdale Lakes Mall, a mega mall in it's day. As we approached the movie theatre you could see the very famous Karamel Korn shop, and the smell of the warm caramel corn over took your senses, and we could not resist. Armed with our goodies we hit the movie, at 8 i had no idea what the movie was about and i did not care. For me then and still today the movie is the least important part of the experience, it is the scenery, clothes and overall atmosphere that i adore. It is why i am drawn to the older movies still to this day, anything with Doris Day and Gene Kelly. And then there are the classics, Hello Dolly and in my opnion Barabra Strreisand was and always will be the best, Pride and Prejudice, Colin Firth only as Mr. Darcy.
I did not know then but sitting there in that moment we were making memories that we still look back on and talk about today. Every time Mom, Kath and i are together we talk of that special birthday, the movie and caramel corn. When we get together we recreate that occasion when possible, it's not the movie or treats but the special people that we get to spend it with. That is what makes my memory so vivid.
